Roxas City is Red Orchid 'Hall of Fame' awardee

ROXAS City – The Department of Health (DOH) will confer on July 2 the Red Orchid "Hall of Fame" award to Roxas City government.

City Health Officer Amelita Robles said the awarding will be held at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) with President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III as the expected guest of honor.

Mayor Angel Alan Celino and some city officials are expected to receive the award.

Robles said Roxas City, which garnered more than 100 points in this year’s nationwide search for tobacco-free environment, was one among the 12 local government units which vied for the much-coveted title.

The winning LGUs will receive a P500,000-project grant on tobacco control.

Roxas City won the Red Orchid Award in years 2010 and 2011.

The DOH Red Orchid Awards highlights achievements in tobacco control in the local government units, government hospitals, government offices and DOH Centers for Health Development.

Winners are judged based on the strength of measures to implement a 100 percent tobacco-free environment using the World Health Organization's MPOWER initiatives which stands for Monitor tobacco use and prevention policies; Protect people from tobacco smoke; Offer help to quit tobacco use; Warn against the dangers of tobacco; Enforce bans on tobacco advertising; and Raise taxes on tobacco
