|Capiz execs bullish on Mar Roxas' candidacy|
ROXAS City – Government officials in Capiz believe Department of Interior and Local Government secretary Manuel "Mar" Roxas II is fit to become the next President.
Roxas is the Liberal Party's (LP) presumptive presidential candidate in 2016, with no less than President Benigno Aquino III saying he is "on top of the list" of the administration's contenders.
Senate President Franklin Drilon is also endorsing him and urging the former senator to express his intention to run.
According to Capiz vice governor Esteban Evan Contreras, having a Capisnon President would bring great pride to the province.
A native of this city, Roxas has the "intelligence, work ethic, clean record, and experience" that make him "the most qualified candidate," Contreras said in a text message. "His integrity is beyond reproach."
Roxas City mayor Angel Alan Celino, meanwhile, said Roxas is "ripe" for the presidency.
The former Department of Trade and Industry secretary has the "personality [and] track record," and deals with people well, said the mayor.
Roxas was the supposed LP standard bearer in the 2010 election but gave way to then senator Benigno Aquino III, who eventually won.
Celino said Secretary Roxas has contributed a lot for the progress of this capital city, including infrastructure and livelihood projects, and the Sagana at Ligtas na Tubig para sa Lahat, or Salintubig, program.
Roxas City councilor Erwin Sicad, on the other hand, said he and his family will support Secretary Roxas because they were impressed by the latter's track record and performance as Cabinet member.
Secretary Roxas' being "level-headed, cerebral and holistic" is what the country needs from a president, according to city councilor Cesar Yap Jr.
Due to the Cheaper Medicines Act, which Roxas authored as a senator, the public now enjoys more affordable drugs, Yap said, but his "biggest reason" for favoring Roxas is the Cabinet secretary's "honesty."
Because of his educational qualifications, integrity, performance, and leadership, Roxas is the "the only person who can continue President Aquino's 'daang matuwid,'" said Capiz Provincial Board member Eleuper Martinez.
